Course description
This training course will teach you the correct methods to safely prune trees off ground, in line with BS3998, the British standards for tree pruning. You will be carrying out arboricultural aerial pruning operations including reductions, crown-lifting, re-pollarding and thinning. It includes understanding tree hazard evaluation and working at height assessment plus the skills to select the most suitable pruning tools. The course is broken down into two days training, concluding on the third day with a NPTC assessment. Candidates must already hold their CS30 Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross Cutting, CS31 Felling Trees up to 380mm, CS38 Tree Climbing & Aerial Rescue and CS39 Aerial Tree Cutting certifications to attend this training course.

- Learn correct pruning techniques for crown lifting, thinning and reduction
- Understand the effect of tree pruning operations
- Determine advantages and disadvantages of pruning tools
- Establish safe and comfortable work positions
- Safe removal of arisings and disposal of waste
- Understand responsibilities of the ground person

Who is the course for?
This level 3 aerial training course is ideal for candidates experienced in aerial working who wish to gain further knowledge and skills to expertly prune and shape trees.

Prerequisites
- Candidates must already hold valid NPTC Level 2 20-03 (CS30) Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross Cutting, CS31 Felling Trees up to 380mm, CS38 Tree Climbing & Aerial Rescue and CS39 Aerial Tree Cutting certificates
- Be able to participate in 3 days of physical climbing
- NPTC candidates must over 16 years old
Equipment requirements
- PPE: Type C chainsaw trousers, hard hat with chin strap, gloves and steel toe-cap boots with chainsaw protection
- Top-handled chainsaw and suitable lanyard
- Fuel & oil
- Maintenance and filing kit
- Pruning tools - Silky saw and secateurs
- Tree climbing harness
- Two climbing lines (30m+)
- Adjustable lanyard
- 5 karabiners (triple action, self-locking)
- 4 prusik loops or friction cord
Please ensure all climbing equipment is EN compliant and has appropriate LOLER certificates and PPE is in good condition. Equipment is available for hire if candidates do not yet have their own. Please contact the office for cost.
