Course description

fav

The CS31 Felling Trees up to 380mm course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to safely fell and process small trees with a diameter of up to 380mm at felling height.

Candidates will learn how to assess the tree and surrounding work area, identify hazards, establish appropriate safety and exclusion zones, and plan the felling operation before work begins.

Practical training covers the safe and accurate use of a chainsaw for tree felling, including the use of appropriate felling cuts, directional felling techniques and felling aids to control the direction of fall. Candidates will develop their ability to achieve accurate hinge dimensions, appropriate stump height and effective control of the tree throughout the felling operation.

The course also covers de-limbing and cross-cutting felled trees, safe and ergonomic working techniques, and the handling and stacking of timber.

Candidates will also learn how to recognise and safely deal with hung-up trees, including the selection and use of appropriate hand tools and mechanical aids to bring the tree safely to the ground.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on effective planning, chainsaw control, safe working practices and developing the practical competence required to undertake small-tree felling operations.
